Using the Band Descriptors to Achieve a High IELTS Score

There is only ONE way to achieve a high score in the IELTS exam, and that's to satisfy the band descriptors. And, the great news is that the IELTS organisation has a public version of the band descriptors (find attached to the right), so we are free to analyse them together (of course, examiners have a slightly different set of band descriptors) So, in this video, we will:

  • look at each of 4 making criteria in turn to understand what is expected of us in the exam
  • discuss in detail how to make sure we "address all parts of the task" (the most common mistake I see are test-takers who DON'T answer the question fully- which means a 5 for Task Achievement)
  • understand what it means to have a "consistent opinion"
  • discuss why the IELTS organisation uses the term Lexical Resource rather than Vocabulary (SPOILER - nobody knows!)
